FMP: “Popular Music: Music Video Project”
For your Final Major Project (FMP) you have the opportunity to plan and produce a music video. The music video must be for an existing track. The track can be from a well-known artist or it can be from a local band. However the track must be available in MP3 form for editing.
In this project you will learn how to:
1. Analyse the form and function of existing music videos using technical language;
2. Write about how artists and musicians are represented in music videos;
3. Create storyboards and shooting scripts;
4. Shoot your video using Sony camcorders;
5. Edit using Adobe Premiere.
The FMP project covers the following Key Concepts of Media Language, Representation, Institution and Audience.
FMP Brief:
You need to research the form and function of music videos. You need to analyse two music videos that are available on You Tube, commenting on the narrative (storyline) of the video and the ways in which the music video promotes the band. You need to use Goodwin's framework to help you analyse your chosen music videos. You need to analyse the representation of gender within your two music videos. See if you can spot instances when gender stereotypes are either reinforced or challenged in the music video. Reports must be 800 words in length.
You then need to plan and produce an original music video. Your music video must include lip-synch and present the meaning of the song in a visually stimulating way.
Production Activities
1. Pre-production paperwork – including storyboards and shooting scripts;
2. Film your music video (max. 3 mins.);
3. Edit your music video.
Project Aims
To investigate the music video as a marketing tool for musicians. Students will research two music videos, commenting on the main stylistic features. Students will then plan and produce a fully realised music video.
Tasks
800 word report on two music videos of your choice. You must comment on the stylistic features such as camerawork and editing. You must also analyse the representation of gender in both of your music videos. Use Andrew Goodwin's framework to help structure your analysis.
Complete all pre-production paperwork
Produce and edit a fully realised music video (max. 3 mins)
A 350 word evaluation of your music video. You must compare and contrast your work with existing, professional music videos.
